What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly referred to as SAD is a result of the body not producing enough Serotonin due to not receiving enough sunlight which interrupts the body clock.  During the winter months, if you live around the Arctic Circle or mainly work night shifts you are less likely to receive much in the way of sunlight and with less than 10% of the population on average working outdoors where natural light is available, is it a condition that affects more people every year.  The addition of heavy use of artificial lights and backlight electronic devices throughout the day has led to people staying awake and being more active for longer which in combination with not enough sunlight leads to disrupted sleep patterns caused by an irregular Circadian Rhythm.

Circadian Rhythms help to regulate the majority of the important functions which includes digestion, appetite, mood and energy levels and without that initial level of light in the morning and too much artificial light as night not enough Serotonin is produced by the brain to ensure your body runs uninterrupted.  In turn this can lead to becoming Seasonal Affective Disorder which has a number of symptoms associated with it, generally these include depression or as it is often referred to; the ‘Winter Blues’.

How do i use my SAD Solutions product to treat Jet Lag?

You can use a SAD Solutions product to help with the effects of Jet Lag by having a treatment at before you travel at times similar to when the local time is to help ease your natural rhythms into sync.  Some SAD Solutions lights are portable as well so can be used during flight provided it doesn’t affect other passengers and can also be used where you are travelling to so you can continue treatment throughout.

What are the symptoms of SAD?

There are a number of different symptoms that sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder may experience so if you are affected by any of the following you should consult a medical adviser to determine if you suffer from SAD or not.

The sun emits light in a wide range that appears white to the human eye.  The full spectrum of light includes every colour, one of which is the Blue Spectrum of light.  Research done by leading US Medical Universities and the National Institute for Health (NIH) discovered that the Blue Spectrum singled out from the others is enough to not only treat Seasonal Affective Disorder but in a quicker treatment time as well.

What is the difference between a white light and a blue light in treating SAD?

Blue light is lower intensity than White light and has been found to be doubly effective at 10,000 lux than white light which contains less of every colour wavelength and can also over-stimulate the Melanopsin receptors if used too much. This means that Blue Light offers a shorter treatment time than the White, though some people do prefer the white light wavelength and both are effective in treating SAD.

How do i use my SAD Solutions product to treat SAD?

Depending on whether you choose a SAD Solutions Blue Light or White Light then principle is the same.  During Autumn and Winter you can use a SAD Light during the beginning on the day for the individual products’ recommended treatment time.  This means placing the Seasonal Affective Disorder Light in your peripheral vision at 20-60 centimetres away from you so that the Melanopsin receptors in your eyes are able to receive the light more comfortably.  Do not use any SAD Light too late in the day as it can make you become more alert and awake and disrupt sleep patterns further, but some people do find a second treatment in the early afternoon can help as well.

Do i need to be diagnosed by a doctor to use a SAD light?

If you suffer from the symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) you can self diagnose and qualify for the VAT exempt price when purchasing a SAD Solutions product as it is treating a medical condition. If you are unsure whether you are suffering from SAD we would recommend that you seek the advice of your GP.
